I think even
before I filled in the blanks, the poem had a very dark tone to it. I think the
first one is not as sad compared to the second paragraph I did. The differences
in the two paragraphs is that it feels like the speaker is remembering good
times he shared with his mother, as to not having many good things to say about
his wife. Another difference I want to point out is in the first paragraph, the
speaker spent a whole day with his mother, where as to his wife, they only have
moments with each other. Also, in the last two lines, the speaker lies to his
mother about everything being alright, while in the second paragraph he lies to
his wife about missing her. I get the sense that the speaker has a bit of
melancholy towards his wife, for whatever reasons. One thing is the speaker lies
to both women in his life to spare their emotions.
